SUMMARY
Objective evidence detailing how and when islanders access primary care and their experiences to inform policy and service development:
1,985 residents participated in a survey designed to provide insights on access to primary health care services in Guernsey and Alderney. The survey was commissioned by CareWatch, an independent community forum sponsored by the Committee for Health & Social Care whose role is to ensure that islanders’ voices are represented. The findings informed a review by the States of Guernsey of the funding and delivery model for primary care.
Key findings included that just under a third of people have health concerns they have not seen a GP about, and just under half said the cost had stopped or delayed them from using primary health care services.
The majority of the responses were received via an online survey, and paper surveys were also made available upon request. We worked with interested stakeholders including local media, Guernsey Disability Alliance and Age Concern to promote the survey to a wide audience. Survey weights for age and gender were applied so as to present results which are representative of the local population.
