Mixed methods survey comprising: stratified random household sampling; online survey open to all residents; targeted face-to-face and paper data collection.

SUMMARY
A repeat survey to collect time series data on the health of residents, informing service delivery and public health decisions in the Bailiwick:
2,656 residents completed the 2018 Guernsey and Alderney Wellbeing survey, which was commissioned by the Committee for Health and Social Care. The Wellbeing survey has been running in the Bailiwick since 1988 and is an important source of the health, experiences, behaviours and attitudes of residents. In particular, survey findings were intended to inform a Joint Strategic Needs Assessment for people over 50.
For comparability with previous years, a stratified random sample of households were selected and invited to complete the survey. Additionally, an online survey was open to all residents in Guernsey, Alderney, Herm and Jethou and targeted face-to-face data collection took place at locations such as day centres and residential homes to promote the survey amongst hard to reach groups. Paper questionnaires were also available at community hubs. Survey weights for age and gender were applied so as to present results which are representative of the local population.
Questions covered general health, lifestyle, wellbeing, alcohol, smoking and drugs, access to health services and money matters. Key findings included that a third of people had a longstanding illness, disability or infirmity; 56% reported being overweight or obese; 36% had experienced a large amount of stress in the previous 12 months; and 27% had risky or high-risk alcohol drinking behaviour.
