SUMMARY
Insights into views on assisted dying to inform public debate around potential change to the law:
2,801 residents across the Crown Dependencies completed the 2021 survey about end-of-life planning and care preferences, including views on palliative care and assisted dying.
The survey was commissioned by Dignity in Dying to coincide with Dying Matters Awareness Week. The insights generated helped inform the debate on changes to the law to allow assisted dying.
The survey also demonstrated the extent to which people thought end-of-life care and specialist palliative care should be prioritised, and how people tend to have strong preferences in relation to the care they receive at the end of their life, but very few have planning documentation in place setting out their wishes.
At all stages of the research we worked to deliver objective, independent and representative findings. Participation was voluntary and respondents were able to skip questions or select prefer not to say if there was anything they were not comfortable answering, and they could exit at any time. Survey weights for age and gender have been applied to present results which are representative of the local populations.
In 2023 over 3,400 people responded to a follow up survey across the 3 jurisdictions, designed to see what the latest views were on this topic.
Finally, in May 2024 a quick poll of the Jersey Island Global Research Panel found that 61% strongly or somewhat strongly supported the law changing in Jersey to allow mentally competent, terminally ill adult residents the option of seeking assistance in their death. Again, this was commissioned by Dignity in Dying to inform the public conversation shortly prior to a debate on assisted dying proposals by the States Assembly, where the decision was made to bring forward primary legislation that permits assisted dying in Jersey for those with a terminal illness.
