SUMMARY
From time to time we also undertake our own research that we hope will be of interest to people living in the islands. This is one of our own surveys, and is an opportunity for us to give back to the island communities who participate in our research.
A quick poll launched on the final day of the UN Climate Change Conference COP29 that was designed to elicit high-level views on climate change. It took around 3 minutes to complete and was completed by 727 Jersey residents and 893 Guernsey residents.
It included four questions from a segmentation tool developed by Yale University that helps categorise people into ‘Alarmed’; ‘Concerned’, ‘Cautious’, ‘Disengaged’, ‘Doubtful’ and ‘Dismissive’. The survey found that as the conference came to a close 45-46% of people in the Channel Islands were categorised as Alarmed, which means they are convinced climate change is happening, human-caused, an urgent threat, and they strongly support climate policies but may not know what they or others can do to solve the problem. A further 22% in Jersey and 30% in Guernsey were categorised as concerned – they think it is a serious threat but the impacts are still distant and therefore it is a lower priority issue.
