SUMMARY
An online survey eliciting residents’ attitude towards smoking and vaping as part of Island Global Research’s public health series about the consumption of substances in our communities.
Over 4,000 residents across Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and Gibraltar completed our survey we conducted to understand people’s views towards the consumption of tobacco and vape products, its impact and measures in improving the overall health of people in the community.
Results for Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man a. highlight how differences in attitudes to smoking and vaping depend on respondent age, and b. show that vaping amongst young people is a particular concern which people would be supportive of more action against.
- Young people aged 18-39 were more likely to say that smoking and vaping is acceptable behaviour, and overall this age group tended to be less concerned about the impact of these behaviours on the community. For example, more than 6 out of 10 18-39 year olds agreed that ‘vaping outside in public is socially acceptable behaviour’ compared to around a quarter of those aged 65+.
- In each of the three islands, just under half of people said they would not know where to go if they or someone they knew needed help stopping smoking or vaping. Around 2 out of 5 think more should be done to reduce harm caused by smoking and vaping in their island.
- There was the strongest support for measures specifically aimed at preventing or deterring young people from smoking and vaping. Just over 90% would support the introduction of support for schools to prevent people from vaping on school grounds and around 85% support more public health campaigns about smoking and vaping targeted at young people. Additionally, around two-thirds of people would support a ‘phase out’ approach by banning smoking and/or vaping only for those born in 2009 or later.
Results for Gibraltar differed slightly from our other islands. Key findings for Gibraltar are included in the full report.
