SUMMARY
From time to time we also undertake our own research that we hope will be of interest to people living in the islands. This is one of our own surveys, and is an opportunity for us to give back to the island communities who participate in our research.
We conducted two surveys to gain high-level insights into perceptions of the extent to which racial and ethnic equality and gender equality are issues in the three islands. This is an area that currently lacks data, and we hope this is a useful contribution for those interested in these issues or who require some insights for decision making. We acknowledge that these are complex subjects and a comprehensive understanding is beyond the scope of a brief survey. Instead, the surveys are intended to be a starting point for those who are looking to develop a deeper understanding of these issues.
On racial equality: This survey was completed by 2,834 residents across the Crown Dependencies. Of those that see this is an issue relevant to their island, it was commonly believed to be “casual” racism and unconscious bias by individuals (rather than organisations) that most needs addressing. Education and increased awareness of the issues, to encourage attitude change was commonly suggested. This note is not to invalidate those with different experiences. We’d also like to thank those who shared experiences of more overt acts of racism, as well as those that who explained that they had never experienced any problems in this respect.
On gender equality: This survey was completed by 2,064 residents across the Crown Dependencies. Across the islands, a notable proportion of residents believe workplace practices surrounding equal pay, parental leave and flexible working, and legislative reforms to offer more protection are key areas that need to be addressed. The influence of education in challenging gender roles and stereotypes in schools and workplaces was also highlighted. Over half saw a role for policies and initiatives to promote gender equality, but with limits – in their comments many argued against the use of quotas.
